This “final art” by Tolkien was subsequently emended by a printer’s artist. For example, faint pencil just inside the lower of the two arch lines (above the seven stars) has been erased, as has a similar pencil line just above the text below the drawing; also, that text has been dropped slightly to allow more room between it and the drawing.

Penciled on verso, “Halls of Manwe on the / Mountains of the World / above Faerie”. Also referred to as “Taniquetil.”

MS. Tolkien Drawings 91, fol. 10r, shows that Hammond & Scull‘s orientation in Artist & Illustrator is correct, and that the diameter (unclear as to inner or pencil guide) is (or should be) 54mm — though this figure was crossed out and not emended.

Tolkien Drawings 91, fol. 4r, shows that all reproductions of this device before 2018 are rotated 90º counterclockwise to what was intended; also, that each side is (or should be) 51mm — though this figure was crossed out and not emended.

Oriented on page such that the four star tails extend to the SW, with “Earendil” inscribed in pencil to the right, with the same orientation. However, there is an arrow pointing NE, and another “Earendil (2)” inscription with that orientation; if that’s done, then the tails of the stars travel straight down, as if the stars are rising, rather than falling.
