TAI #37Idril Celebrindal plaque with heraldic device

Inscribed above in Tengwar in blue pencil, “Menelluin Irildeo Ondolindello”; in Latin characters in pencil to the lower right, “Idril’s Device / The ‘Cornflower‘ pattern / Menelluin. / Origin of (often / debased) Numenorean / circular patterns”; and in Latin characters below, “Inlaid plaque / preserved from Gondolin / & descending from Earendil / to Númenor, whence it was / saved by Elendil & taken to / Gondor”. MS. Tolkien Drawings 91, fol. 12r shows that Hammond & Scull‘s orientation is correct, and that the diameter (unclear as to inner or pencil guide) is 54mm — though this was crossed out and not emended)
